PRIVATE KOMINKA RETREAT
From Understanding to Embodiment
What if you could step out of the patterns and demands of everyday life long enough to experience a different way of being—and learn how to bring it home with you?
The 3.5-Day Kominka Retreat is an immersive experience of the Kominka Method™, held at Zen House Kominka in rural Oregon.

What the retreat is for
Surrounded by the rhythms of a traditional Japanese farmhouse, nature, tea, and intentional practice, you will explore how attention, awareness, values, and intention shape the way you experience and respond to life.
The Journey
Understanding → Experiencing → Practicing → Embodying
Over 3.5 days, you will move beyond simply understanding the ideas behind the Kominka Method™. You will experience them through guided practices, tea ritual, mental fitness, reflection, conversation, nature, and the rhythms of the kominka.
You will explore how to:
-
Notice where your attention has gone
-
Allow your inner experience without judgment or suppression
-
Discern what matters and what other possibilities are present
-
Align your attention and actions with your intention
The goal is not to eliminate difficult thoughts, emotions, or circumstances.
It is to develop the capacity to meet them with greater awareness—and to bring what matters to you into the way you live.
What guests often leave with
You will leave with a deeper understanding of how your mind works, where your attention goes, and how you can relate to your experience more intentionally.
You may discover a greater capacity for:
Peace.
Clarity.
Purpose.
Joy.
Confidence.
Compassion.
Connection.
Abundance.
Why a Kominka
A traditional Japanese kominka is more than an old house.
Its materials, craftsmanship, proportions, and relationship with nature reflect values that have been carried through generations: care, simplicity, presence, hospitality, continuity, and impermanence.
At Zen House Kominka, these values are embodied in the space itself. You don't simply learn about them—you live within an environment shaped by them.
The retreat extends this idea inward.
Just as a kominka gives tangible form to invisible values, the Kominka Method™ explores how we can create an internal architecture where the qualities we value become tangible in our everyday experience.

What You Will Experience
Kominka Method™ Practice
Learn and practice the four movements at the heart of the method:
Notice → Allow → Discern → Align
You will explore how to recognize reactive patterns, create space around your experience, reconnect with what matters, and make more intentional choices.
PQ Mental Fitness
Strengthen your capacity to notice where your attention has gone and relate to your inner experience without judgment.
You are not trying to make your mind stop producing difficult thoughts or emotions.
You are learning how to experience them without being automatically swept away by them.
Tea Ritual
Tea provides a sensory doorway into presence.
Through deliberate movement and the senses—touch, sight, sound, aroma, and taste—you will experience how ritual can give attention a place to land and connect awareness with what you value.
Reflection & Conversation
Time for guided reflection and meaningful conversation creates space to explore what you are noticing—not as an intellectual exercise, but as part of your lived experience.
Nature & the Rhythms of the Kominka
There is also space simply to inhabit the environment.
The changing light, surrounding landscape, traditional architecture, tea, meals, and daily rhythms become part of the experience.
